Post Falls Students Place In State Inel Competition

Post Falls High School’s Idaho National Engineering Laboratories Scholastic Tournament Team won fourth place for the second year in a row at the state competition held last month at Albertson’s College in Caldwell.

Post Falls INEL front row included team members: Kelly Grantham (captain), Anna Zemke, Ryan Hanlon, Jack Caughran, Katy Hill, Steve Burke and Kim Swanson. Team Coach was Greg Berg.

Michael Mallinen, Hayden Lake, was presented with the Idaho Junior Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Young Idahoan award for 1996.

The award is presented annually to an Idaho leader under the age of 40 and is based on outstanding leadership in global, national and local levels and uses 13 criteria assessing the individual’s contributions ranging from the economy to the environment.

Mallinen was chosen due to his contribution to global environmental issues, leadership and significant achievements in international business, and contribution to the state’s economy.

Jessica Barkl, a senior at Coeur d’Alene High School, was chosen as Scholar of the Month by the Hayden Lake Rotary Club.

Barkl, daughter of Ronald and Christine Barkl of Hayden Lake, has earned letters for drama, dance team and academics and is one of the valedictorians for her class.

She is active in debate and drama and has performed in 25 dramatic productions, recently with a role in “Godspell.”

Barkl plans to earn a degree in fine arts and would like to attend the Cornish College of the Arts or the University of Idaho.

Chanda Roane, a senior at Lake City High School, was recently chosen as the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club’s Scholar of the Month.

She maintains a 4.0 grade-point average and has been involved with honors classes, Human Rights Club, Environmental Club, Idaho Drug Free Youth and Young Volunteers in Action.

Roane, daughter of Marc and Darlene Williams of Coeur d’Alene, works part-time, has played varsity soccer for four years and is the team captain this year.

She plans to go into the field of veterinary medicine and minor in French.
