German Sentenced For Aiding Stasi

A German man who worked for the U.S. military in former West Berlin was sentenced Friday to two years probation for passing information about his employer to the East German secret police for 16 years.

Horst Kant confessed to providing details about the structure of the U.S. guard battalion, weapons and security arrangements to the Ministry for State Security, or Stasi, until 1989, when his contract with the U.S. military expired.

Kant, 46, even delivered each new edition of the Americans’ telephone book, which the Berlin court said the Stasi found especially valuable.

Kant was recruited in 1973 by contacts of his father, who lived in East Berlin.
