Obituaries

George Aavedal Sandpoint

Service for George Aavedal, 85, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Burial will follow at Pack River Cemetery. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Aavedal, who was born in Livingston, Mont., died Monday.

He moved to the Pack River area in 1918 and attended Pack River School. In 1935 he moved to Naples, where he lived for many years.

He was a farmer and worked in the mines in Mullan, Idaho. He moved to Sandpoint in 1989.

Mr. Aavedal enjoyed farm work, gardening and being outdoors. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 589 in Sandpoint.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Goldie, in 1977.

Survivors include a son, Bob of Sandpoint; one daughter, Mary Winslow of Auburn, Wash.; one brother, Harold Aavedal of Sandpoint; one sister, Clara Still of Rupert, Idaho; and five grandchildren.

Allene Anderson Kingston, Idaho

Service for Allene Lea Anderson, 67, will be today at 11 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson, who was born in Stevensville, Mont., died Tuesday. She moved to the Silver Valley at an early age and grew up there.

She was a mother and homemaker and also operated several businesses.

She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Medicine Mountain Grange.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Roy; two daughters, Diana Opp of Coeur d’Alene and Susan Zimmer of Hayden, Idaho; her mother, Nada Padula of Silver King, Idaho; two brothers, Loren Padula of Spokane and Mike Padula of Silver King,; four sisters, Laele Kovach of Minnesota, Ferdina Patchet of Wyoming, Lila Crowder of Montana and Luella Wilson of Pinehurst, Idaho; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Arnold ‘Al’ Crawford Newman Lake

Service for Arnold L. “Al” Crawford, 66, will be held today at 1 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Crawford, who was born in Cascade, Idaho, died Tuesday.

He grew up in Emida, Idaho, and worked as a farmhand and logger.

He served in the Army from 1947 to 1955, later returning to Emida. He moved to St. Maries in the 1950s and drove a logging truck.

Mr. Crawford moved to Murray, Idaho, before moving in the late 1970s to Spokane, where he worked for George Merriman Farm Equipment.

He retired in 1984 and moved to Newman Lake in 1988.

He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed hunting and camping. He was a member of the Star Road and Greenacres Baptist churches. He was also a member of the Osburn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Bertha; two daughters, Marlene Back of Oregon and Kathlene Crawford of Newman Lake; five brothers, Albert of Oregon, Alonzo of Montana, Roy of Clark Fork, Idaho, Clifford of Council, Idaho, and Allen of Orofino, Idaho; three sisters, Mary Kay Hills of Emida, Diane Winter of St. Maries and Lois Soles of Oregon; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Betty Byrd Colville, Wash.

Service for Betty M. Byrd, 51, is set for 1 p.m. today at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. Burial will be at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville.

Mrs. Byrd, a lifetime Colville resident, died Tuesday at home.

She graduated from Colville High School and married Ken Byrd in 1963..

She worked as the housekeeping supervisor at Benny’s Panorama Motel for many years.

She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Brad Byrd of Newport, Wash., and Perry Byrd of Colville; one sister, Dorothy Irwin of Moses Lake; and two grandchildren.

Jack O’Donnell Spokane

Service for Jack Eugene O’Donnell, 68, will be at 11 a.m today at St. Anne Catholic Church in Medical Lake. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. O’Donnell, who died Feb. 29, was born in Spokane.

He had lived in Spokane, Cheney and Medical Lake.

Mr. O’Donnell graduated from North Central High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University and a master’s degree in business administration from Gonzaga University.

He served in the Marine Corps for four years and in the Air Force for 16 years. He served four tours of duty in Vietnam, flying KC-135s.

He later taught business at Eastern Washington University.

He was Republican precinct chairman of Silver Lake and was a member of the Soaring Club. He played in the Spokane Accordian Ensemble.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Josephine O’Donnell; one son, John O’Donnell of Lake Oswego, Ore.; one sister, Mary O’Donnell of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Robert Wigdorski Spokane

Service for Robert Donald “Bob” Wigdorski, 59, is set for 1 p.m. today at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wigdorski, who died Tuesday, was born in Buffalo, N.Y.

He retired as a master sergeant from the Air Force in 1974.

He worked in the Washington State corrections system as a job developer and counselor to criminal offenders in transition from institutional life.

He also worked as Gonzaga University’s director of safety and security from 1974 until 1979.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanie Wigdorski; two daughters, Sue Scott and Kathleen Wigdorski, both of Boise; one son, Robert Wigdorski Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev.; two stepsons, Rich and Jerry Gilmore, both of Spokane; three brothers in Buffalo; and seven grandchildren.

Katherine ‘Kay’ Hohenstein Spokane

Visitation for Katherine “Kay” Hohenstein, 85, is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at North Hill Christian Church with burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Hohenstein died Tuesday.

She was a former Seattle resident and had lived in Spokane for 65 years. She had worked for a transfer company. In the mid-1950s she became a bookkeeper and office manager for Showacre, Coons, Shotwell and Adams. She retired in the mid-1970s.

She was a member of North Hill Christian Church.

Her husband of 38 years, Harold Hohenstein, died in 1973.

Mrs. Hohenstein’s survivors include two sons, Douglas Hohenstein of Gig Harbor, Wash., and James Hohenstein of Spokane; one daughter, Mina Buchan of Riverside, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Helen Wilson Spokane

Memorial service for Helen M. Wilson, 96, was last Saturday at St. Luke’s Extended Care Center.

Born in Franklin Park, Ill., Mrs. Wilson died Feb. 29.

She graduated from high school in Illinois and worked as a railroad secretary in Illinois, and in Spokane, for the Northern Pacific Railroad. She retired in the mid-1960s.

She had lived in Spokane since 1936.

After she retired, she volunteered at Deaconess Medical Center until 1990.

Her husband, Robert Wilson, died in 1951.

Survivors include two daughters, Diane Feske of Kent, Wash., and Maryellen Wakefield of Spokane; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Extended Care Center.

Robert Carter Spokane

Service for Robert P. “Bob” Carter, 78, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Carter, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated from Central Valley High School and was active in the CVHS Alumni.

He worked with Centennial Mills for 37 years and retired in 1976.

He was a member of AFL-CIO Millworkers Union.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Virginia Carter; one daughter, Kathlyn Seely of Spokane; one son, Jack Carter of Seattle; one sister, Gladys Dean of Opportunity; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Eva Bryson Lewiston

Service for Eva R. Bryson, 83, will be at 1 p.m. today at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Burial will follow at Pullman City Cemetery.

Mrs. Bryson, who died Tuesday, was a lifetime Pullman resident.

In 1933 she married Dwight Bryson.

She was a homemaker. Her husband retired in 1972 and they moved to Clarkston.

Her husband died in 1983, two days short of their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Bryson moved to Lewiston in 1990 to be closer to her daughter.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty LaRoy of Lewiston and Patty Kerr of Ethel, Wash.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Greta ‘Margaret’ Smith Spokane

Service for Greta D. “Margaret” Smith, 69, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith, who died Monday, was born in Germany.

She was a 25-year Spokane resident and had worked as a jewelry sales clerk for Hemmingmoore’s Originals and J.C. Penney.

She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Cindy Shoolery of Spokane; one son, Jack Smith of Clinton, Wash.; one brother, Erich Lohmann of Anchorage, Alaska; and four grandchildren.

Violet ‘Tiny’ Werle Spokane

Service for Violet L. “Tiny” Werle, 75, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Werle, a 65-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday. She was born in Spokane.

She married Lester Werle in 1939 in Kellogg. They moved to Bremerton in 1941 and returned to Spokane in 1946.

She had worked for First National Bank of Spokane for 30 years before she retired.

She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1435 Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1984.

She is survived by three sons, Ronald and Terry Werle, both of Spokane, and Rudy Werle of Seattle; and two grandchildren.

Fern Gilden Spokane

Private graveside service was held for Fern Mildred Gilden, 82.

Mrs. Gilden, who was born in Perris, Calif., died Tuesday at Valleycrest Nursing Home.

She grew up in Kellogg, and married Jack Gilden in 1930. They moved to Spokane in 1934.

In 1943 she went to work with her husband when he became manager of the Boots and Saddle Club in Dishman and later at the Liberty Lake Country Club.

Mr. Gilden died in 1966.

She had worked as a receptionist at Helen’s Beauty Shop in Opportunity and as a desk clerk at the Thunderbird Lodge. She retired in 1982.

Mrs. Gilden is survived by one son, John Gilden of Veradale; one sister, Ione Faw of Sunnyvale, Calif.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Adams Spokane

Rosary for Beatrice C. Adams, 95, is set for 3 p.m. Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m Monday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Adams, who was born in Lapeer, Mich., died Tuesday.

She was a 94-year Spokane resident and had worked as a clerk/receptionist at city hall.

She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church.

Her husband, John Adams, died in 1962.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Adams of Spokane; two sons, Laurence Adams of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and Donald Adams of Des Plaines, Ill.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Elsie Goodman Curlew, Wash.

Memorial service for Elsie L. Goodman, 81, was Friday at her son’s home in Republic, Wash.

Mrs. Goodman died Tuesday at Ferry County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Minnesota and came to Washington in the 1930s. She had worked as a legal secretary and for the Forest Service.

She and her husband, Jack Goodman, settled in Spokane. They later moved to the Curlew area.

Her former husband, Jack, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son, Joseph “Bill” Goodman of Republic; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Jacob Olsen Spokane

No service will be held for Jacob E. Olsen, 89. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Olson, who died Tuesday, was born in Clearwater, Idaho.

He moved to Spokane in 1913 and graduated from Millwood High School.

He worked as a carpenter and then worked for Trues Oil Co., as a salesman. He was transferred to Wenatchee in 1929 and to Yakima in 1933. In 1941 he moved to Ritzville, Wash., and managed a service station for the oil company.

He returned to the Spokane Valley in 1942 and helped build government buildings during World War II.

In 1944 he moved to Colfax, Wash., where he owned The Associated Oil Co. He moved to Oregon in 1949 and later moved to Arizona. He returned to the Spokane Valley in 1991.

His wife of 67 years, Tena, preceded him in death.

He is survived by two daughters, Ilene Lacey of Plummer, Idaho, and Janet Girts of Spokane; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Canavan Deadwood, S.D.

Service for Kenneth W. Canavan, a former Spokane resident, will be held at a later date in Rapid City, S.D. Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Canavan, who died March 4 in a nursing home in Rapid City, was born in Great Falls, Mont. He was 79.

He lived in Spokane from 1953 until 1991 and worked as a manager for J.C. Penney. He moved to Deadwood in 1991.

He is survived by three daughters, Kay Hofer of Spearfish, S.D., Pam Taylor of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Patty Beecroft of Great Falls; two sons, Doug Canavan of San Jose, Calif., and Randy Connell of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Dorothy Kalal of Longview, Wash.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

John Baumgartner Spokane

Family service was held for John O. Baumgartner, 75.

Mr. Baumgartner, who was born in Lewistown, Mont., died Feb. 23.

He had lived in Spokane since 1954 and worked as a bartender.

He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Baumgartner is survived by two daughters, Sandra O’Neal of California and Colleen Keller of Spokane; two sons, Joseph Baumgartner of Kansas and George Baumgartner of Spokane; one sister, Lillian Ravine of Spokane; one brother, James Baumgartner of Allyn, Wash.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
