Bomb In Trash Rocks London Neighborhood

Compiled From Wire Services

The bomb that rattled a West London neighborhood early Saturday had some of the markings of an IRA attack, but no one immediately claimed responsibility.

Scotland Yard would say only that a “small, improvised explosive device” went off in a large recycling bin, a tactic used previously by the outlawed Irish Republican Army.

The blast caused no injuries but blew out windows in cars and nearby buildings. It left a small crater in a concrete wall around a cemetery near the Old Brompton Road, a major thoroughfare between the trendy South Kensington and Fulham neighborhoods.

Although damage was minimal, the explosion added to tensions heightened by a renewed IRA bombing campaign intended to end British rule of Northern Ireland.
