Shadle Park Girls Open Lead At Bowling Finals

The Shadle Park girls and Edmonds-Woodway boys lead after four rounds of the 33rd annual state high school bowling championships at Sports Page Lanes.

The final four games are scheduled today beginning at 10 a.m. Shadle Park averaged 825 per game in the five-person format and won all four games.

Edmonds-Woodway boys also finished 4-0 and averaged 989 per game. Central Valley is in second place.

Scott Kerssen of Hazen leads the individual boys race and Christine Corbus of Yakima leads the girls.

College baseball Husky Classic

Mike Wetmore and Jon Fischer each drove in three runs as Washington State pounded out 16 hits in notching a 14-9 win over Navy at the Kingdome.

Mike Muehlbauer (1-1) picked up the win in relief for WSU (7-17) as the Cougars snapped a three-game losing streak.

Fischer stroked three hits, while five other WSU batters had two hits each. The key to the Cougars’ five-run win was a seven-run second inning.

In another tournament game, Washington defeated Gonzaga 9-4. The Huskies (4-10) scored twice in the first on Ryan Powell’s triple and Ryan Soules’ inside-the-park homer on a sinking line drive to center field.

Whitworth 7-0, CWU 5-5

Paco Crandall delivered a game-winning single in the ninth inning as the visiting Pirates opened the season with a 7-5 win over Central Washington. CWU won the nightcap 5-0.

In the opener, Whitworth reliever James Holmes allowed one hit over the last five innings.

Prep wrestling

Sandpoint won its third straight Idaho A-1 state title at Pocatello.

The Bulldogs had three state champions - Brett Lawrence, Trevor Walkington and Jared Lawrence. Brett Lawrence won his fourth state title, the state’s second four-time champ.

Walkington won the 135-pound title and sophomore Jared Lawrence won at 112, his second straight title. Paul Weseman (140) of Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls’ Al Mack (103) also won.
