Victorian Jewelry Is Cheney Cowles Lecture Topic

Notable Spokane jeweler and historian Penn Fix will give a slide lecture at the Cheney Cowles Museum auditorium on Wednesday, March 27.

Fix will discuss Victorian-era jewelry, its cultural aspects and how it was worn.

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. The presentation is free, but donations are welcome.

University opens new gallery

Honors Gallery, a new art gallery has opened on the Eastern Washington University Cheney campus. The new art depot resides in the Honors Lounge in Hargreaves Hall.

“Labor and Leisure,” a collection of prints from the 1930s and ‘40s by Pablo O’Higgins, Doris Lee and Miguel Covarrubias, is the first exhibit. It will be shown through the end of May.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s closed during the noon hours.

Auditions

Valley Repertory Theatre will conduct auditions for “Ruthless,” its spring musical, on Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the theater (Sprague and Pines).

Troy Nickerson will direct. Roles are open for seven women, one man (who will play a woman) and one child in third or fourth grade.

Auditioners are to prepare a song; an accompanist will be provided. For more information, call 927-6878.

Spokane Civic Theatre will hold auditions for “Kismet,” an Arabian musical about the life of a Baghdad poet, on Friday, Saturday and next Sunday at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park.

“Kismet,” based on a book by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis, needs 19 men and 11 women to fill roles. All must be 16 or older. Robert Allen will direct.

Friday’s audition is at at 7 p.m. Saturday’s and Sunday’s happen at 2 p.m. No preparation is needed; dress comfortably. For more information, call 325-1413.

Exhibitions to open

Two art exhibits, “Mary Farrell: Recent Prints, Paintings and Drawings” and “Student Annual,” open Friday, March 22, at the Jundt Art Museum on the Gonzaga University campus.

Farrell, a recent addition to GU’s art faculty, is new to the area. Her exhibition will familiarize the art community with her award-winning work.

To coincide with the professor’s show, Farrell will give a free public lecture, “An Artist’s View,” on Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Jundt lecture hall.
