CV Boys, Shadle Girls Visit Victory Lane

Central Valley’s boys and Shadle Park’s girls rolled to decisive victories Sunday in the final round of the 33rd State high school bowling championships at Spokane’s Sports Page Lanes.

Central Valley, second after Saturday’s first round, finished with a 7-1 record and a total pinfall of 8,303. Jerry Martin led the way for the Bears, averaging 222 pins to earn most valuable player honors and a spot on the all-state team.

Kim Seifert, who averaged 188, paced Shadle Park. The Highlanders joined Moses Lake and Eisenhower with a 6-2 record, but toppled 6,811 pins to defeat Moses Lake by 81. Seifert also gained MVP and all-state recognition.

Baseball

Jeff Birkland worked the full nine innings, scattering eight hits, as Gonzaga upset No. 20 Long Beach State 7-3 at Seattle in the Husky Baseball Classic before 4,500 in the Kingdome.

The Bulldogs broke the game open with three runs in the eighth innings.

In other games, Kevin Miller’s three-run, first-inning home run sent the Washington Huskies on their way to an 8-4 victory over cross-state rival Washington State and NAIA power Lewis-Clark State blanked Navy 10-0.

Softball

Julie Fountain allowed only two hits and Kelley Kinder went 4 for 5 as the Sasquatch downed South Mountain CC 6-2 in the Great Phoenix Open Tournament.

Scottdale then came from behind to beat CCS 9-5, leaving the Sasquatch (3-3) with a 3-2 record in the tournament.
