Howard Cox Spokane

Service for Howard C. Cox, 71, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Born in Troy, Idaho, Mr. Cox died Monday.

He moved to Spokane when he was a boy.

He worked for Home Lumber Co. in Spokane from 1943 to 1953. He was also a truck driver for Inland Asphalt for 30 years and retired in 1984.

He was a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 690 and Greenacres Tabernacle Church. Mr. Cox is survived by his wife of 51 years, Delcia Cox; one daughter, Nancy Zinkgraf of Spokane, one brother, John Cox of Prince George, British Columbia; one sister, Dorothy Hoyt of Spokane; and one granddaughter.

Veva Guske Fairfield

Burial Mass for Veva Nadine Guske, 79, was Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse, Wash. Burial was at LaCrosse Cemetery.

Born in St. John, Wash., Mrs. Guske died Friday.

She graduated from high school in Chewelah, Wash., and moved to Colfax, Wash., and began nurse training. She lived and worked at Bruning Funeral Home during this time.

She later moved to LaCrosse and began working for the Joseph Guske family. Mr. Guske’s first wife died shortly after she arrived.

In 1938 she married Joseph Guske in LaCrosse. They lived on the farm in LaCrosse until 1986, when they moved to Spokane.

Mr. Guske died in 1989. She moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Fairfield in 1992.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Winona Grange.

She is survived by two daughters, Rose Marie Parsons of Vermillion, S.D., and Barbara Mainord of Priest River, Idaho; four stepdaughters, Evelyn Zimmer of Moscow, Idaho, Lorraine McGuire of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Carolyn Hubbard and Marilyn Webb, both of St. John, Wash.; one son, Joseph Guske Jr., of Spokane; one stepson, Lester Guske of LaCrosse; 43 grandchildren and 83 great-grandchildren.

Goldie Strauss Edwall, Wash.

Visitation for Goldie G. Strauss, 95, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Born in Narrows, Va., Mrs. Strauss died Tuesday.

She moved to the Sprague, Wash., area when she was 6. She married Delbert Strauss in 1920 in Sprague, and they settled in Edwall, where she lived until she moved to the Lincoln Hospital Nursing Home in 1990.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 131 and the Waukon Grange.

Her husband died in 1943.

She is survived by one son, Eugene Strauss of Edwall; one daughter, Patricia Neilson of Seattle; and one sister, Elaine Nelson of Seattle.

Wesley Pierce Spokane

Visitation for Wesley Amel Pierce, 71, is scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Pierce, who died Tuesday, was born in Wellington, Utah.

He was a 51-year Spokane resident and was a superintendent for buildings and grounds for Central Valley School District.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Musicians Union.

He served in the Army during World War II.

His first wife, Marie Pierce, died in 1992.

Mr. Pierce is survived by his wife of three years, Eileen Pierce; two sons, Dwayne Pierce of Spokane and James Pierce of Seattle; one daughter, Carol Orion of Seattle; one brother, George Pierce of Salt Lake City; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Allan Mack Colville, Wash.

Memorial service for Allen I. Mack, 61, will be at 7 p.m. today at Colville High School gymnasium. Burial will preceded at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Danekas Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mack, a Stevens County commissioner, died Friday. He was born in Lyons, Colo.

In 1967 he and his family moved to Addy, Wash., from Puerto Rico, where he had been a lay missionary for two years.

He had worked as a rancher, a real estate agent, an auctioneer and a pilot. He also worked at the former Arden Lumber Co. and co-founded the Arden Equipment business.

He was elected Stevens County commissioner in 1989. He was the current chairman of the board and served as chairman four times during the eight years he was a commissioner.

He had served on the Northeast TriCounty Board of Health and the Northeast Washington Regional Support Network and had been vice president of the Washington State Association of Counties and vice chairman of the Washington Governmental Entity Pool.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Beverly Mack; one son, Randy Mack of Havre, Mont.; two daughters, Jody Anderson of Colville and Cynthia Noble of Big Lake, British Columbia; two brothers, Gene Mack of Collbran, Colo., and Gerald Mack of Lyons, Colo.; one sister, Joan Hagen of Minot, N.D.; and eight grandchildren.

Elizabeth Detmer Spokane

Funeral Mass for Elizabeth E. “Betty” Detmer, 74, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Peter Catholic Church.

Born in Leavenworth, Wash., Mrs. Detmer, died Friday.

She graduated from North Central High School and was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and was a volunteer at Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Mrs. Detmer is survived by her husband, Maynard “Doc” Detmer; two sons, Larry Detmer of Oakland, Calif., and Craig Detmer of Sumner, Wash.; two sisters, Cecilia McLeod and Helen Wamstead, both of Spokane; and one granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter Catholic Church Building Fund.

Louise Lamb Spokane

Memorial service for Louise K. Lamb, 91, will be at 10 a.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Lamb, a 52-year Spokane resident, died Sunday. She was born in Derby, Iowa.

She had worked for the Postal Service in the 1950s as a mail sorter and was also a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Madelyn Davis of Calif.; one sister, Martha Hansen of California; one grandson and one great-grandchild.

Bertram Revill Medical Lake

Visitation for Bertram “Bud” Revill, 57, is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Ball and Dodd Medical Lake Funeral Home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Medical Lake Middle School. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Revill, who died Sunday, was born in Newark, N.J.

He moved to Medical Lake after serving at Fairchild Air Force Base for more than four years. He had worked as an equipment mechanic for the city of Medical Lake for five years and in 1979 went to work as a heavy equipment mechanic for the state.

Mr. Revill had served as chief of the Medical Lake Fire Department since 1980 and had served on the board of the Washington State Firefighters Association.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Fern Revill; one son, Dennis Revill of Medical Lake; one sister, Joann Fass of Manasquan, N.J.; and one granddaughter.

John Hulteng Spokane

No service will be held for John L. Hulteng, 74.

Mr. Hulteng, a journalist, educator and author, died Saturday at his Spokane home. He had been a summer resident of the Spokane area for more than 40 years.

He was born in Grand Forks, N.D.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota, a master’s degree from Columbia University and a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University.

Mr. Hulteng had been the editorial page editor of the Providence (R.I.) Journal and Bulletin, and resigned in 1955 to join the faculty of the University of Oregon at Eugene.

He was at the University of Oregon for 22 years and served seven years as dean of the School of Journalism. He received regional and national awards for distinguished teaching during his tenure at Oregon.

He was recently named among four Outstanding Alumni of the Columbia University School of Journalism.

Mr. Hulteng was also a professor of communication at Stanford University for nine years before he retired in 1986. He served for one year as assistant director of the Communication Institute of the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii.

He was the author of an ethics handbook used by many newspapers and recently published in seven foreign languages.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was a member of The Spokane Club and the Hayden Lake Country Club.

Mr. Hulteng is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Jean Hulteng; one daughter, Karen of Minnetonka, Minn.; two sons, Robert of San Francisco and Richard of Tualatin, Ore.; and five grandchildren.

Jeanette ‘Jennie’ Burger Spokane

Graveside service for Jeanette M. “Jennie” Burger, 91, will be at 1 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burger, a 54-year Spokane resident, died Saturday. She was born in Gardena, N.D.

She had worked as a cook at several restaurants, including Mother’s Kitchen and Casey’s Restaurant, and also at nursing homes.

She is survived by one son, Jerald Burger of Spokane; one daughter, Joyce White of Kettle Falls, Wash.; one brother, LeRoy Whetter of Everett; four sisters, Florence Johnson of Everett, Francis Hoff of Tacoma, Cecil Warn of Lead, S.D., and Muriel Johnson of Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Judith Thomas Spokane

Graveside memorial service for Judith C. Thomas, 50, is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Thomas, who died Feb. 28, was born in Helena.

She was a nursing assistant at care centers and had worked in Ritzville, Wash., Kalispel, Mont., and Spokane, where she had lived for 23 years.

She is survived by one sister, Darlene Davis of Walla Walla.

William Jenks Spokane

Memorial service for William H. Jenks, 67, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Jenks, who was born in Cusick, Wash., died Monday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and served in the Army during the Korean War.

In 1953 he married Mary Williams in Spokane.

He worked for General Machinery for 29 years as a machinist and retired in 1992.

Mr. Jenks was a 55-year Spokane resident and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1435.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years; one daughter, Cheryl Szendre of Spokane; one son, Mark Jenks of Hayden, Idaho; three sisters, Rettie Sharp, Elizabeth Palmer and Betty Pullen, all of Spokane; one brother, John Jenks of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Luella Cope Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Luella M. Cope, 84, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Cope, who was born in Harrison, Idaho, died Sunday.

She worked as a telephone operator and later co-owned the family business, Cope’s Mercantile, for 20 years.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene in the 1970s.

Mrs. Cope enjoyed gardening and reading and was a member of the First Baptist Church, and the Order of the Eastern Star of Harrison, Syringa Chapter No. 18.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, in 1983. Survivors include three sons, Bill of Coeur d’Alene, Dave of Harrison and Doug of Mead; two sisters, Leone Addington of Harrison and Velma Osmond of Oregon; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Betty Peterson Almira, Wash.

Memorial service for Betty J. Peterson, 71, will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Almira. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peterson, who died Friday, was born in Tacoma.

She moved to her husband’s farm, eight miles north of Almira, shortly after they were married in 1945.

She worked for the Navy during World War II and later worked for the Department of Agriculture as a parttime crop enumerator.

She also operated a weaving business, Two’s Company, and a cake decorating business. She was a Sunday school teacher.

She was a member of Almira American Legion Auxiliary, Potter-Doyle Post No. 98; Highland Grange; and the Almira Toastmistresses.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Lawrence Peterson; two daughters, Carol Peterson of Spokane and Christine Peterson of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one sister, Arlene Painchaud of Brea, Calif.
