Dance Brigade Charges Into The Met Tonight

Fri., March 15, 1996

Rarely do modern dance troupes with national reputations tour through Spokane so such an appearance here is a not-to-be-missed event.

Tonight the Dance Brigade, a company from Oakland, Calif., performs “Ballet of the Banshees … Resurrection!” at The Met. Although the title of the work includes ballet, the dance will not. This is a modern dance company and the movements run the gamut of genres from jazz to gymnastics.

And, the choreography is firmly rooted in issues with political and social overtones, in this case one woman’s journey with breast cancer. The dance portrays the five stages of grief and dying.

The troupe has drawn reviews such as this, published in the Louisville Courier Journal: “These five women from Oakland, Calif., certainly form one of the hottest groups on today’s dance horizon. Bearing allegiance to no single tradition, the group is firmly grounded in the techniques needed to produce thrilling dance drama.”

Dance Brigade last appeared in Spokane in 1993. This appearance is sponsored by the Women’s Cultural Exchange. The dancing starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15 from G&B; and Street Music, 117 N. Howard, $17 at the door.
