Wounded Soldier In Good Condition

Associated Press

A wounded American soldier was in good condition Saturday at a military hospital in Bosnia and is due to be evacuated to Germany on Monday.

Spc. Shawn R. Austin, 21, of Livingston, Mont., is in good spirits and is expected to recover, said Maj. Darryl Cuda, a surgeon at the 212th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.

Austin is scheduled to be evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Facility in Germany.

He is the second soldier in the roughly 19,000-member American peacekeeping force in Bosnia to be wounded by hostile fire. He was shot just below the left shoulder early Friday by a civilian he thinks was probably a looter.

“When I saw the figure standing there, I kind of just froze,” Austin recalled in an interview from his hospital bed shortly after the shooting. “He fired once. He hit me.”
