Obituaries

William Cox Deer Park

Funeral for William E. Cox, 73, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cox, who was born in Mansfield, Wash., died Saturday.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II and was based in North Africa. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters.

He received an engineering degree from Washington State College and an education degree from Whitworth College.

From 1953 to 1983, he and his wife were the owners and publishers of the Tri-County Tribune in Deer Park.

In 1989 he retired from a 25-year teaching career at Riverside and Deer Park High schools.

He was timekeeper for high school basketball teams during his entire teaching career and coached the swim team, bowling, tennis, basketball, football, and all levels of baseball.

Mr. Cox was a member of the Country Homes Kiwanis Club. He also served as chairman of the Deer Park Planning Commission and was a member of Deer Park Airport Board and Deer Park Economic Development Committee.

He was also a member of the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce, Deer Park Chapter of the Washington Pilots Association and the Washington State Mechanical Engineers Society.

Mr. Cox received more than 50 awards, including lifetime service awards and community and school appreciation plaques.

Survivors include his wife, Bette; two daughters, Marcia Bay of Pasco and Jeanice Schmick of Prosser, Wash.; one son, Jim Cox of Wilbur, Wash.; one sister, Mary Moore of Kettle Falls, Wash.; and 11 grandchildren.

Lorraine Miller Ritzville, Wash.

Service for Lorraine D. Miller, 69, will be held today at Zion Congregational Church in Ritzville. Burial will follow at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Miller, a lifelong resident of Ritzville area, died Friday. She was born in Schrag, Wash., and graduated from Lind (Wash.) High School.

She married Calvin Miller in 1945 and worked as a nurse’s aide at the Ritzville Hospital. She also worked as a sales clerk at J.C. Penney, Johnson Furniture and Ritzville Furniture.

She retired from Ritzville Furniture in 1987.

She was a member of Zion Congregational Church and the Eagles Lodge 2739 Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1982.

She is survived by three sons, Gary Miller, Kenneth Miller and Mark Miller, all of Ritzville; two sisters, Elta Ragsdale of Spokane and Darlene Lightbody of Sun City, Ariz.; three brothers, Thomas Tompkins of Ritzville, Vernon “Red” Tompkins of Spokane and Glen Tompkins of Davenport, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Big Bend Bowling Alley.

William Ransier Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for William D. Ransier, 65, will be today at 3:30 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Ransier, who was born in Yakima, died Thursday.

He grew up in Oakesdale, Wash., and graduated from high school there. He later served with the Navy during the Korean War and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1953.

He attended North Idaho Junior College and lived in Spokane and Sandpoint before returning to Coeur d’Alene in 1957.

He worked as an assistant manager at J.C. Penney Co. and later worked at the Potlatch Mill, retiring in 1986.

Mr. Ransier worked for several years after his retirement at Winton Elementary School.

He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and carpentry.

Mr. Ransier had been divorced and was preceded in death by his third wife, Frances, in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky Ransier of Los Angeles and Bill Ransier of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Terri Carter of Post Falls; and two grandchildren.

Harold Kibler Sandpoint

Service for Harold Lee Kibler, 68, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kibler, who was born in St. Ignatius, Mont., died Saturday.

He was raised and educated in St. Ignatius, graduating from St. Ignatius High School. He went on to attend college in Missoula before serving with the Army in Korea during the Korean War.

He later moved to Sandpoint and worked as a logger in Montana, Oregon, Washington and Idaho until his retirement.

Mr. Kibler enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing the banjo and mandolin. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge Aerie 589 and the Sandpoint Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Lucille; three sons, Lewis Kibler of Bothell, Wash., Linn Kibler of Enterprise, Ore., and Corbin Kibler of St. Ignatius; three stepdaughters, Donna Bricker of Sandpoint, Shirley Simmet of Wallace and Judy Gumm of Hayden Lake, Idaho; one brother, Leland Kibler of Seattle; one aunt, Mae Drier of Sandpoint; nine grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren; and two cousins, Glen and George Biggs of St. Ignatius.

Thomas Martinich (Martin) Kellogg

Memorial service for Thomas John “Tom” Martinich (Martin), 73, will be today at 2 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Martinich moved to the Silver Valley in 1992 from Minnesota.

He was an inventor and held many patents. He helped build over 3,000 new houses in three mining towns and was listed as one of the top 10 builders in the Who’s Who Book of Records.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary; one son, Tom of Minnesota; six daughters, Elizabeth Hautala and Marietta Stravens, both of Spokane, Rosanne Lazanis of Mica, Anna Martinich-Rambo of Bellevue, Wash., and Mary Martin and Janet Johnson, both of Salem, Ore.; a brother, John Martinich of California; seven sisters, Barbara Cartler of Detroit, Helen Peterson, Kate Krivich, Mary Lasky, Eva Grefenberg and Francis Matko, all of Minnesota, and Rosylyn Lostrom of California; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Danielle Shinaver Spokane

Memorial service for Danielle Jean Shinaver, 25, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene United Methodist Church, 1470 W. Hanely Ave. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shinaver, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday as the victim of a homicide.

She moved to Bayview, Idaho, as a teenager and returned to Spokane three years ago.

She recently worked at McDonald’s Restaurant in Spokane as a manager trainee.

Survivors include her husband of nine years, Scott, of Montana; two sons, Jessy and Terry, both of Coeur d’Alene; one daughter, Samantha of Coeur d’Alene; her mother, Paula Murbach of Coeur d’Alene; her father, Terry Murbach of Bayview; one sister, Deina Allen of Oregon; and her grandparents, Jean Wicks of Everett, and Lynn and Almeda Murbach of Bayview.

Memorials may be made to the Children’s Village Memorial Fund.

Dorothy Thomas Spokane

Funeral Mass for Dorothy E. Thomas, 82, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thomas, who died Friday, was preceded in death by her husband, Roy.

A longtime resident of Spokane, she was born in Camas Prairie, Mont.

Mrs. Thomas was a first-grade teacher for School District 81 for 22 years. She taught at Regal, Cooper and Longfellow Elementary schools. She was a member of the Dirt Daubers Garden Club and was a master flower arranger.

She is survived by two sons, Frank Thomas of Colville, Wash., and Herbert Thomas of Moscow, Idaho; two daughters Alice Hamilton of Spokane and Dorothy Herres of Pasco; one sister, Agnes Gray of Spokane; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Myrle Merritt Coeur d’Alene

Service for Myrle Lorilla Merritt, 75, will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Coeur d’Alene Stake. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Merritt, who was born in Utah, died Saturday.

She graduated from high school in Anaconda, Mont., and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1950.

She attended North Idaho College and graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in library science.

She worked as a high school librarian in Blackfoot, Idaho, before retiring and moving back to Coeur d’Alene in 1985.

Mrs. Merritt enjoyed reading and genealogy and was a member of the National Society of Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Albert Wallace and Paul Merritt.

Survivors include two sons, Calvin and Albert Wallace, both of Coeur d’Alene; one daughter, Joyce Hinkle of Wyoming; two brothers, Eugene Jensen of Coeur d’Alene and Glen Jensen of Ogden, Utah; one sister, Faye Lee of Coeur d’Alene; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ruby Mary Scarcello Rathdrum, Idaho

Funeral Mass for Ruby Mary Scarcello, 92, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Scarcello, who was born in Buckeye, Wash., near Spokane, died Saturday.

She moved to Rathdrum and lived on the family farm. Mrs. Scarcello took an active role in supporting education, including school bond issues.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Joe, in 1975.

Survivors include four sons, Frank of Oregon, Joe and Charles, both of California, and Dennis of Spokane; five daughters, Anna Russell of Spokane, Margaret French of Tennessee, Leona Kearney of Sunnyside, Wash., Dora Christianson of Deer Park and Dorothy Donahue of Lynnwood, Wash.; one sister, Helen Cerenzia of Spokane; 28 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Stanislaus Church in Rathdrum, where she was a member.

Claire Patterson Spokane

Rosary for Clair M. Patterson, 90, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger-Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Patterson, who was born in Minneapolis, died Friday.

She was an 83-year resident of Spokane.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Roy Duffy in 1945 and Thomas “Pat” Patterson in 1986.

A graduate of Holy Names Academy, she worked as an advertising sales representative in Spokane.

She was a member of St. Monica’s Guild and the St. Augustine Parish and Choir and was past president of the Women of Rotary.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Duffy of Spokane and Richard Duffy of Liberty Lake; one daughter, Vonna Jean Argites of Sagle, Idaho; and nine grandchildren.

Anna ‘Ann’ Rinaldi Kellogg, Idaho

Vigil service for Anna “Ann” Rinaldi, 83, will be today at 7 p.m. at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg. Memorial Mass will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will be follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rinaldi, who was born in Harrison, Idaho, died Friday.

She graduated from Harrison High School in 1930 and moved to the Silver Valley. She was a homemaker and had also worked for Pik Kwik Grocery Store in Kellogg as a clerk for 35 years.

She had also been a clerk for Blegen’s Grocery Store.

Mrs. Rinaldi enjoyed basketball, gardening and spending time with her family.

She was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Don Rinaldi of Prichard, Idaho; one daughter, Sally Baumgardner of East Wenatchee, Wash.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lorence Livingstone Spokane

Memorial service for Lorence G. Livingston, 88, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Livingstone, a 65-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

He attended Central Valley High School and received a degree in chemistry at Spokane University. He worked as a chemist and general manager for Ideal Cement in Spokane for 50 years.

He retired in 1972.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lyda; two daughters, Jean Lehmbecker of Tum Tum, Wash., and Roberta Riley of Green Bluff; three sons, James Livingstone of Seattle, Donald Livingstone of Connell, Wash., and Steve Livingstone of Greenacres; two sisters, Effie Shelley of Otis Orchards and Eva Wareheim of St. Maries; one brother, Floyd Livingstone of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Hatton Spokane

Service for Lawrence J. Hatton Sr., 72, will be today at noon at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home with burial to follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Hatton, a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. He received the Victory Medal.

Mr. Hatton retired from Deaconess Medical Center in 1989 after 23 years in food service.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ada; one daughter, Teresa Mann of Spokane; one son, Lawrence Hatton Jr. of Spokane; two stepsons, Freeman Scott of Delhi, Calif., and Kenneth Scott of Spokane; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a half-brother, Ronald Hatton of Spokane.
