NCAA women’s tournament

San Francisco was one and done in its first appearance in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament a year ago. The Dons are doing much better in their second try.

Seeded 12th, San Francisco is in the round of 16 after upsetting fourth-seeded Duke 64-60 in a second-round Mideast Regional game Monday night at Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium.

San Francisco (24-7), co-champion of the West Coast Conference, moved into the regional semifinals in suburban Chicago on Saturday against defending national champion Connecticut. Connecticut is the No. 1 seed in the Mideast.

Mideast Region

San Francisco 64, Duke 60: At Durham, N.C., Brittany Lindhe keyed San Francisco’s upset with 17 points. The Dons led 59-39 midway through the second half, then survived a 6-minute scoring drought and a Duke rally.

Duke (22-9) closed to 61-55 with 5:03 left, but missed four of its last six shots and got no closer than the final score.

Connecticut 88, Michigan State 68: At Storrs, Conn., Kara Wolters, limited to 9 minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, scored 22 points to send UConn (32-3) to the victory over Michigan State (18-11), its 18th straight victory.

East Region

Tennessee 97, Ohio State 65: At Knoxville, Tenn., Latina Davis scored a career-high 25 points and freshman Chamique Holdsclaw added 20 as Tennessee improved to 28-0 in NCAA games at home. The Vols (28-4) have reached the round of 16 in all 15 NCAA tournaments.

Tennessee shot 68 percent in taking a 49-36 halftime lead, then finished off the Buckeyes (21-13) with a 19-2 run in the first 5:20 of the second half.

Old Dominion 72, Toledo 66: At Norfolk, Va., Ticha Penicheiro’s steal with 2 minutes left and a followup basket by Esther Benjamin helped stifle a Toledo rally. Toledo (25-6) cut a 21-point deficit to single digits before Old Dominion (29-2) settled down and held on.

Kansas 77, Texas 70: At Lawrence, Kan., Kansas (22-10) held on after leading 66-52 with 5:10 left. Angie Halbleib and Charisse Sampson hit pressure free throws in the final minute to keep the Jayhawks on top.

Sampson made two free throws after Texas cut the lead to 72-64. Halbleib hit one to put Kansas up 75-67 and sank two more after Amie Smith’s 3-pointer drew Texas to 75-70 with 22 seconds left.

Midwest Region

Louisiana Tech 84, Southern Mississippi 46: At Ruston, La., Debra Williams scored 21 points and Louisiana Tech (30-1) held Southern Mississippi’s starting guards to just four baskets in 28 attempts. Southern Mississippi (22-8) shot 23.3 percent.

Stephen F. Austin 93, Clemson 88 (OT): At Clemson, S.C., Katrina Price forced overtime with a 3-pointer, then scored the first four points of the extra period to send the Jacks (27-3) home with a victory. She finished with 21 points.

With a chance to tie, Clemson’s Amy Geren missed a 3-point shot with 17 seconds left in overtime.

West Region

Stanford 94, Colorado St. 63: At Stanford, Calif., Kate Starbird scored 22 points and top-seeded Stanford overwhelmed Colorado State (26-5) to extend its winning streak to 21 games.

Naomi Mulitauaopele added 15 points and Olympia Scott had 14 for Stanford (27-2), which plays Alabama on Saturday night in Seattle.
