Man Shoots Self With Handgun

A 22-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg Monday while showing off his .45-caliber handgun.

Byron Witthaus of Coeur d’Alene was trying to show girlfriend Suzanne Gribble, 25, the difference between “single action and double action” pistols when his Colt MK IV Series handgun went off about 10:30 p.m.

Witthaus apparently removed the magazine and then replaced it “without thinking about it,” according to police reports. He pulled the trigger and the gun went off.

The bullet lodged behind his knee cap. Witthaus was scheduled for surgery Tuesday to remove the bullet.
