While this season’s blizzards cost retailers and other companies billions of dollars in loss business, they may have given a boost to the telecommuting industry.

Telecommute America, an organization that aims to increase awareness about telecommuting, said the tough winter has prompted many employers to consider ways to avoid productivity losses caused by bad weather.

Telecommute America surveyed Fortune 1,000 firms in January, and found that 10 percent, who don’t have telecommuting programs, said they will begin or consider a telecommuting option this year.
