‘Race’ Another ‘Ducks’ Theme

Chris Hewitt St. Paul Pioneer Press

We’re at a high school in Hawaii, and a ragtag team of misfits is preparing to enter a solar-car marathon in “Race the Sun.”

Halle Berry: “Once we start this thing, we see it through.”

Jim Belushi: “They’re quitters. That’s all - they don’t finish anything.”

Student: “We can do this.”

Me: “Will Hollywood never run out of variations on the ‘Mighty Ducks’ theme?”

There are no surprises in “Race the Sun,” but it’s fairly entertaining anyway. The race takes place in Australia; the young cast members commit to their roles instead of acting like they’re cooler than them; and the solar cars, which resemble souped-up cigar tubes, are sort of neat.

There are only two ways this can end: Either they win or they take pride in their ability to go the distance. Even so, it’s a satisfying conclusion, one that ends up being improbable, predictable and uplifting all at the same time.
