The international track and field federation appears to be on the verge of allowing Dallas sprinter Michael Johnson to compete in both the 200- and 400-meter events in Atlanta. The 27-member IAAF Council, the ruling elite of the world track federation, meets Sunday and Monday in Cape Town, South Africa. The Council alone has the authority to change the Olympic track schedule. Johnson asked a year ago for the Olympic schedule to be adjusted so he could attempt the historic “double” in Atlanta.

Playing in her native South Florida for the first time in three years, Jennifer Capriati rallied to beat Lea Ghirardi-Rubbi 7-5, 6-1 in the opening round of the Lipton Championships at Key Biscayne.
