Champion Flat-Picker Will Teach And Perform

Hey guitarists, need to brush up on your flat-picking skills?

You can learn from one of the best - Steve Kaufman, who will conduct a flat-picking workshop April 5 and 6, and give a concert as well. Kaufman is a three-time national fingerpicking champion.

The workshop and concert are being presented at the Women’s Club, Ninth and Walnut, by the Inland Northwest Bluegrass Association and Sound Hole Music Store. The concert happens Friday at 8 p.m. The workshop costs $85; the concert is $15. Call 624-5033 for more information.

On the road

Sara Edlin-Marlowe, assistant professor of communication arts and director of theater at Gonzaga University, has begun a statewide tour of 10 cities, giving one-woman performances.

In separate show, Edlin-Marlowe highlights the lives of painter Georgia O’Keeffe and Sacajawea, the Native American guide on the Lewis and Clark expedition.

On March 22, she performed in Twisp; during April and May, she has engagements at GU’s Russell Theatre (April 2, 7 p.m.), Eastern Washington University (May 7, noon), and Centralia College (May 15, 7 p.m.) During the summer, she will perform at Orcas Island, Othello, and possibly Yelm.

Auditions

Act Theatre will conduct auditions for “To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday,” Monday and Tuesday, April 1 and 2, at the theater, 425 N. Evergreen.

There are openings for three women, 27 to 40; two men, 35 to 40; and two girls, 15 to 17.

The Visiting Artist Lecture Series at Cheney Cowles Museum, 2316 W. First, continues Tuesday, April 9, with Los Angeles writer and artist Buzz Spector.

Spector, who currently teaches at the University of Illinois, intellectually challenges ideas of how art is viewed, as well as how it can be seen as a contemporary text.

Color, light, spirit

The works of Dudley Dana, a photographer and psychologist, are on exhibit at the Corbin Art Center, 507 W. Seventh.

To coincide with the Spokane Visual Arts Tour, a reception for Dana will be from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday, April 5, at the art center.

Dana, a Montana resident, strives to capture the complex relationships between and among color, light and spirit.

The Corbin Art Center is open Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and evenings and Saturdays when classes are in session.
