China Halts Games Near Taiwan Coast

Compiled From Wire Services

China announced on Monday that it has ended its third round of war games off the coast of Taiwan, held immediately before, during, and after last Saturday’s presidential election on Taiwan.

Apparently intended to intimidate voters, who nonetheless gave a decisive victory to President Lee Teng-hui, the military exercises raised tensions between the mainland and Taiwan by introducing the possibility of military conflict in a palpable way.

With the election over, and each side voicing conciliatory messages about the chances for meetings and handshakes with each other, the end of the war games seemed to be one more sign that tensions are receding.
