Cda, Lake City Win In Impressive Fashion

Coeur d’Alene’s two high school baseball teams had successful outings in Inland Empire League-opening doubleheaders Tuesday.

League favorite Coeur d’Alene opened in impressive fashion, sweeping defending State A-1 champion Lewiston 11-8 and 12-5 at Lewiston.

Lake City was also victorious on the road, taking two from Post Falls, 2-1 and 5-3 at Brett James Memorial Field.

At Lewiston, CdA (7-0) parlayed 29 hits into 23 runs.

In the first game, Viks pitcher Mark Scates went the distance for his third win of the season.

The second game featured a rematch of the state championship game starters, Jesse Hoorelbeke of CdA and Lysandro Perez of Lewiston.

This time Hoorelbeke was victorious. “The kids were pretty excited about (the rematch),” CdA coach Paul Mather said.

The Viks jumped on Lewiston (1-4) for seven runs in the opening inning of the nightcap. For the doubleheader, Ben Johnston led the Viks with a 6-for-8 effort, all six hits doubles.”We hit the ball very well, but overall the play was sloppy,” Mather said.

At Post Falls (3-3), the Timberwolves received a pair of pitching gems from junior Andy Potter and senior Ryan Scharnhorst.

Potter, a transfer from Gonzaga Prep, scattered eight hits in the opener while Scharnhorst handcuffed the Trojans to five hits in the nightcap.

“Our kids threw very well today,” LC coach Cory Bridges said. “We had some timely hits too.”

LC (3-3) scored what proved to be the winning runs in the opener during the fourth. With two outs, Ben Scharenberg reached on a double. A Post Falls error put another T-Wolf on base. Potter scored Scharenberg and Scott Moglia hit a run-scoring single.

The second game was called after six innings because of darkness.

Softball

Lakeland’s Jessica McBride took CdA pitcher Amy Maurer for a ride, then she used a free ride shortly thereafter to give Lakeland a 10-inning, 8-7 win over the Vikings in a non-league game.

To start the bottom of the 10th, McBride smacked a triple off Maurer.

Two batters later, Maurer threw a wild pitch and McBride scooted home for the game-winner.

In another non-league contest, St. Maries’ Brianne Badget helped her team defeat Post Falls 11-8.

Badget earned the win on the mound, and in the top of the second smacked a two-run homer to give her team a 6-2 lead.

Soccer
