Hedges Can Help Safeguard Home

Orange County Register

The next time you’re considering what to plant next to your home, consider hedges - thick hedges.

Several years ago, a study by the University of Utah showed that hedges apparently make a difference in whether a potential burglar tries to break into a home. In homes where thick hedges were adjacent to the house, there were fewer burglaries than those that had no such hedges.

Why? One theory was that a hedge signfies an expression of territorial rights. Another, more practical, theory dealt with a burglar’s comfort. A thick hedge could mean a burglar would have to deal with a branch poking him while he tried to enter the window.
