Knee Injury Ends Season For CV Pitcher Del Mese

Central Valley’s baseball team suffered a blow when R.J. Del Mese was injured and lost for the year.

But it didn’t keep the Bears from defeating rival University on Thursday.

Del Mese, CV’s pitcher and all-GSL football quarterback, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in a non-league game Saturday against Sandpoint. He will undergo surgery.

“It’s really sad, I feel so bad for him,” said coach Ed Garcia. “He’s a wonderful young man who was going to have a good season.”

The injury occurred while he was rounding first base after hitting a ground ball.

On Thursday, CV evened its GSL record with a 14-11 win over the Titans. The team rallied from a 6-2 deficit to lead 14-6 and weathered U-Hi’s comeback.

Four Bears, Raif Jochim, Nate Lynch, Andrew Larson and Ben Miller homered for the team which had eight extra-base hits. Larson had three hits in the game.

Bakken saves Titans with D

The D in Devon Bakken’s first name stands for defense.

Without it, University’s softball team would not be undefeated.

Bakken’s acrobatic play at shortstop while all around her faltered, was as responsible for U-Hi’s 2-1 win over Central Valley as was her bat.

“Defensively she’s as solid as there is,” said coach Ken Van Sickle. “She made a great volleyball roll up the middle (on one stop).”

To date, Bakken is batting .600 for the 3-0 Titans, driving in the winning run with the first of two singles against CV.

In a game where all three runs were unearned and the teams combined for eight errors, Bakken handled eight of nine chances.

“I know we were playing a little tight. For a veteran team we shouldn’t be,” said Van Sickle. “It was a game I feel fortunate to win. It wasn’t pretty but anytime you get a W against a contender, that’s what counts.”
