Pharmacy Settles Over Girl’s Death

Compiled From Wire Services

Rite Aid Pharmacy and a former druggist agreed to pay $1.7 million to the family of an 8-year-old girl who died after being given the wrong painkiller while recovering from a tonsillectomy.

Megan McClave suffered a morphine overdose in 1994 after being given Roxanol instead of Demerol.

Kent Schafer, a pharmacist with 20 years’ experience, told the state Board of Pharmacy that he thought the medications were interchangeable.

Schafer surrendered his license in 1994.
