Sport Town Opens Store In Parkade Plaza

Bloomies will be thrilled.

Sport Town, a new sporting goods store specializing in running shoes, clothing and equipment, opened this week in the Parkade Plaza in downtown Spokane.

Sport Town is the fourth store owned by Sports Shack Inc., which has locations under that name in Moscow, Pullman and University City Shopping Center.

The four stores are owned by Steve and Debbie Warwick, of Colfax.

Steve Warwick said the expertise and reputations of his employees will contribute to the success of his downtown store.

The store is co-managed by Curt Kinghorn, the former owner of the Human Race - a store specializing in running equipment that closed last spring - and Chris Olsen, who was an official representative for Asics brand running gear.

“You’ve really got to have the right people working for you,” Warwick said. “We’ve had people come in and say, ‘Is Curt here? Oh, I’ll come back later.”’

Warwick also plans to develop the store as a running center, where people can go to get information or registration forms for races in the area.

In addition to running gear, Sport Town carries equipment and clothing for baseball, tennis, soccer and in-line skating. The store will rent in-line skates and restring tennis and racquetball racquets. Warwick also plans to carry lines of clothing from all the local colleges.

The space formerly was occupied by Fit ‘N’ Hollywood, an upscale clothing and sports equipment store. Citing decreasing foot traffic, Fit ‘N’ Hollywood owner Patti Pettigrew called it quits after Christmas.

Warwick, on the other hand, considered sites in NorthTown Mall and the soon-to-be-built Spokane Valley Mall, and decided downtown was the place to be.

“We’ve been trying to make a decision on where in this marketplace we want to go,” he said. “We think things are going to happen down here.”
