Shakespeare Scholar, Author Dead At 69

Sam Schoenbaum, a widely published Shakespeare scholar, has died of cancer. He was 69.

The author of “Shakespeare’s Lives” and “William Shakespeare: Records and Images,” Schoenbaum taught at the University of Maryland from 1976 until 1991 and served as director of the school’s Center for Baroque and Renaissance Studies.

He moved to Washington to be closer to the Folger Shakespeare Library after teaching for 21 years at Northwestern University in Illinois.
