Eastern Faculty, Staff Honored For Contributions

Several Eastern Washington University faculty and staff members have been recognized for special contributions made to the university.

Donna J. El-Din, distinguished professor of physical therapy, received EWU’s Trustees’ Medal, the highest honor the school bestows on a faculty member for achievements in teaching, scholarship and contributions to the profession. She will also receive a cash award of $1,500.

PTI PacificCorp Achievement Awards, consisting of a plaque and $1,000, were given to the following faculty members for outstanding achievements in teaching:

Susan L. Megaard, professor of taxation and business law; Joan E. Niemann, associate professor of applied psychology; Robert W. Atwood, professor of psychology; Martin J. Zykowski, professor of music; and Margaret A. O’Connell, associate professor of biology.

Carl E. Combs, information systems consultant in academic affairs, and Doreen M. Timm, secretary supervisor for the vice provost for special programs, received Distinguished Service Awards for exemplary service supporting the academic mission of the university. The awards consist of a plaque and a $1,000 cash award.

Carolyn Kizer, distinguished honorary professor of poetry and art, received the Founder’s Day Award for her unique creativity, commitment and pursuit of excellence toward worthwhile goals. She received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1985.

Beth Moore, Northwood Junior High, Megan Murphy, Lewis and Clark and Nikki Velategui, University, all members of the Spokane Silver Mermaids synchronized swimming team recently competed in the U.S. Junior National Championships in Irving, Texas.

Moore and Murphy have qualified to swim their duet at the West Zone Senior Championships this weekend in Poway, Calif.

John Breeden, Empire Floral and Nursery, was recently named Business Contributor of the Year by Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest.
