Golden Pen Award Winner

The Spokesman-Review is pleased to announce that Yvonne Lopez Morton of Spokane has won the monthly Golden Pen Award.

In her April 11 letter, “Can’t see lilacs for the lowlifes,” Morton called attention to what she sees as a growing trend in which people in private and public life act out their ugliest traits and deficits - ignorance, spite, hate, greed and lust - thus despoiling the quality of life and reputation of their region.

The Golden Pen Award expresses the newspaper’s appreciation for letter writers and artists who demonstrate exceptional eloquence and clarity in their contributions to our Roundtable page.

The monthly winners, as well as the weekly nominees for this award, are chosen by Opinion page staff members. The monthly winners receive a 10-karat-gold Cross pen.

We congratulate Yvonne Lopez Morton and thank all of the readers who care enough to debate public issues on this page.
