Mead’s Fong Aims To Defend In Girls Singles

The 51st Inland Empire Tennis Tournament kicks off Friday with match play set to begin at 9 a.m. at five sites around Spokane.

Girls singles will be held at Rogers, while the boys singles are at Ferris. Girls doubles will be at Mission Park, with the boys set to play at Hart Field. Mixed doubles will be played at Central Valley.

On Saturday, all championship and consolation events will be played at CV, with semifinal matches for boys and girls in all events set to start at 8:30 a.m.

In singles action, Ellensburg’s Jon Grueber returns to defend his boys title, and Mead’s Amy Fong returns to defend her girls championship.

In girls play, depending on Friday’s draw, there is a good chance University’s Leslie Whitten could meet Fong in the final. Fong beat Whitten 6-2, 6-3 in the championship.

Representatives from the 39 schools will be in attendance. The Greater Spokane League will shoot for its third consecutive overall team title. Mead won last year, Lewis and Clark in 1994.
