Sallie Mae Scholarships Awarded To Local Students
Christopher Cael, a Shadle Park High School junior, and Jacob Fries, a senior at Central Valley High, received all-expense paid Sallie Mae/Presidential Classroom Scholarships to participate in the Presidential Classroom High School program in Washington, D.C.
The students, two of 200 nationwide, were selected for academic excellence, leadership in school activities and personal commitment to the community.
Inland Northwest students named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester of Gonzaga University’s School of Law are: Sean A. Anderson, James W. Roberts, Jennifer Aspaas, Christopher Cauble, Mark F. Foster, Melinda Foster and Margaret Zimmerman, all of Spokane, and Norma F. Jensen of Chattaroy.
Two senior Girl Scouts have been selected to attend national interest programs, called Wider Opportunities, this summer: Sarah Schrempp, of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 181, Rockford, will attend “Fun, Fantasy and Footlights,” in New Haven, Conn. The workshop is about the arts and communication. Hope Fleischauer, senior Girl Scout Troop 82, Mead, will attend Canoe Country Rendezvous in Hibbing, Minn.
The Gonzaga University debate squad finished the 1995-96 season ranked No. 3 in the nation based upon its overall success at tournaments this season.
The team of juniors Ian McLoughlin and Will Brewer placed third at the Cross-Examination Debate Association National Championship Tournament at California State University.
Fred Petersen, senior, and John Voight, freshman, finished fifth.
The team of McLoughlin and Brewer also won Kansas University’s Heart of America Tournament, and placed third in the final National Coaches Poll of the Year, the highest ranking nonsenior team.
Also representing Gonzaga at the national tournament were Kristin Olson and Sarah Peterson, freshmen; Katie Bauer, sophomore; and Jeff Browder, junior.
Gonzaga brought home the “Founders Cup,” recognizing the overall success of the program.
Three Inland Northwest Girl Scouts have received their religious recognition awards: Jolin Pilling, senior Girl Scout Troop 476, and Janessa Pilling, cadette Girl Scout Troop 41, received the God and Church award at Community Presbyterian Church in Wilbur, Wash.
Kristin Tinnel, senior Girl Scout Troop 476, Wilbur, earned the God and Country award at Faith Community Church, Electric City, Wash.
