Children’s Day To Be Held At Manito’s Japanese Garden

There’s still time to pre-register for the Children’s Day at the Japanese Garden. The Friends of Manito call the day “a cultural experience for the whole family.”

Activities include storytelling, music, origami, calligraphy and a Japanese card game. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Manito Park Japanese Gardens. While pre-registration is recommended (call 456-8038), it’s not required. The activities are free.

Going native

Two new booklets are available - “Landscaping with Native Plants” and “Native and Adapted Landscape Plant List for the Inland Northwest” both from the Master Gardener Resource Center, 222 N. Havana, 533-2048.

The “Landscaping” booklet includes a list of native plant nurseries as well as tips for plantings and is $2 plus shipping. The “Native Plant” booklet is $6 plus shipping and lists more than 400 plants recommended for this area along with growing needs.

Eat and browse

This year the annual Mother’s Day Walking Tour of homes includes a brunch at one of the homes, but space is limited to 60 so make reservations now. The champagne brunch is at 10 a.m. and is at a 1936 home on Upper Terrace Road (one of the homes on the tour). Brunch tickets are $15 and are available by calling the Historic Preservation Office, 624-6983. The proceeds benefit work for national historic designation. For a story on the Mother’s Day Tour and a map, see the May 10 IN Life section.

Step back in time

For a glimpse of the genteel life along the scenic Hudson River in New York, plan to spend Wednesday evening at the Cheney Cowles Museum. A free slide show-lecture titled “Historic Homes of New York’s Hudson River Valley” will be given by James Kemp-Slaughter, a Seattle antiques appraiser, at 7:30 p.m. The program will review three centuries of history along the river through the homes, which represent a broad range of architectural styles.

Doing it easy

Woodworking projects can be intimidating, which is why authors David and Jeanie Stiles wrote “Woodworking Simplified” (Charters Publishing, $18.95). Just to emphasize the point, the subtitle boasts: “Foolproof Carpentry Projects for Beginners.”

The new book covers hints for getting started, the use of basic tools and step-by-step illustrations for 19 practical projects, including birdhouses, a toy chest, work bench and herb rack. The ISBN number: 1-881527-98-0.
