College President Gets Prison Term

A former Mississippi College president drew more than seven years in prison Thursday for embezzling nearly $3 million from the Baptist school and spending it on gifts, investments and prostitutes.

Lewis Nobles, 71, pleaded guilty Jan. 18 to fraud, tax evasion and money laundering.

U.S. District Judge William H. Barbour Jr. sentenced Nobles to seven years and three months behind bars.

The indictment covered thefts from 1989 to 1993, the year Nobles left the school, but prosecutors said he began stealing in 1977. Nobles was accused of converting checks and other donations to his own use.
