The Slice Let’s Hit The Ground Running

Today’s Slice contains nothing about Bloomsday.

Firing from close range: After watching people violently hack and cough in the direction of a woman staffing a minor emergency clinic’s sign-in desk, we decided people in that job must be either immune to everything or sick all the time.

Parents say the darnedest things: Seeing a TV preview of “Twister,” Randy Guidinger expressed skepticism about an entire movie’s story-line being spun from a tornado.

His 12-year-old son, Dane, piped up. “‘The Wizard of Oz,’ Dad?”

Take a tip from the movies: When the little kid asks Shane if he knows how to shoot, Shane says “A little.”

Feel free to try this on tennis courts, golf courses and anywhere prospective Hoopfest teams gather.

The one way life really has changed: Relatively few high school kids take showers after gym class these days.

Bad mood rising: After our suggestion that this area suffers from excessive crankiness, we heard from “the grump formerly known as Floyd” who described himself as a “creative displeasure artist.”

Smoke signals: “Better warn readers taking your advice about scheduling a late summer family reunion here to schedule around grass-burning season,” wrote Elk’s Michael Helland. “Otherwise they’ll spend the whole time explaining why they’re allowed to do that here.”

One danger in not having children: Missing out on the role-model incentive to clean up your act when it comes to TV-watching and junk food.

Fair enough: A one-time Spokane resident named Naomi, who now lives near Columbus, Ohio, recently had her purse stolen. In it was one of her favorite keepsakes, a commemorative coin from Expo ‘74. It cost only a dollar back then. But it had sentimental value.

Anyway, a friend of hers who lives here asked us to help him find a replacement. Sure, we said. This is a job for Slice readers.

Note to Moscow’s Susan Ripley and others: OK, we promise. No more shaving-accident stories.

Today’s Slice question: Who is the Inland Northwest’s best baby sitter?
