Compiled From Wire Services

Mark Brooks’ 30-foot putt for birdie on the first hole of a playoff with hometown favorite Jeff Maggert earned him a victory Sunday in the Shell Houston Open in The Woodlands, Texas.

Maggert, playing on his home course at the Tournament Players Course at The Woodlands, missed his attempt to send the event to a second playoff hole when his 18-foot birdie try from the fringe was a few inches to the left side of the hole.

Brooks had a 2-under 70 in the final round, while Maggert, the third-round leader, had a 72. Each finished at 274 for four rounds.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot a final round 78 to finish 14 strokes off the lead.

In Charlotte, N.C., Graham Marsh survived a wet tee shot on the next-to-last hole and won the PaineWebber Invitational by one shot over Brian Barnes and Tom Wargo.

Marsh steadied himself after the bogey on No. 17 and parred the final hole at the Tournament Players Club at Piper Glen to put the finishing touches on a 3-under-par 69 and his second Senior PGA Tour victory. He finished with a 10-under par 206.

Karrie Webb took her amazing rookie season to a new level, holding off some of the best players on the LPGA Tour with a 6-under-par 66 to win the Sprint Titleholders Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Webb tapped in for birdie on the 18th hole for a one-stroke victory over Kelly Robbins. Her 16-under 272 earned her $180,000.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, had a final round 75 to finish 13 strokes off the pace. Robin Walton of Clarkston finished one stroke further back with a 74 for a total of 286.
