Wallace Wins With Late Pass

Rusty Wallace got his second victory of the year and his sixth career road course win in the Save Mart Supermarkets 300 at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Wallace overtook Jeff Gordon on the 69th lap of the 74-lap race and went on to hold off Mark Martin by about two car lengths at the finish line. The margin of victory was .46 seconds.

NASCAR driver Bill Elliott was released from HealthSouth Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala., six days after surgery to repair a broken left thigh bone sustained in a crash last week at Talladega Superspeedway.

Doctors anticipate a full recovery, but it was unclear when Elliott will resume driving.

Damon Hill won his fourth race in five starts by capturing the Grand Prix of San Marino in Imola, Italy. Hill averaged 120.131 mph in the 63-lap event at the 3.04-mile course to beat pole-sitter Michael Schumacher.

In Dinwiddie, Va., Shelly Anderson won in top fuel, John Force captured the funny car title and Warren Johnson won in pro stock at the NHRA Pennzoil Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park.
