Washington Utilizes Big Inning To Trip WSU, Clinch Tie For Title

The Washington Huskies, exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning, clinched a tie for the Pacific-10 Conference North baseball title Sunday with a 9-4 victory over the Washington State Cougars in Seattle.

Jake Kringen (3-6) picked up the win with relief help from Shawn Hannah and Cody Morrison as the Huskies (28-23 overall, 15-5 in league) beat WSU for the third time in the four-game weekend series. The Huskies won six of the nine games between the cross-state rivals this season.

Oregon State 11, Portland State 1

In Portland, Chris Wakeland and Ryan Hilts each had three hits as the Beavers pounded Vikings in a Pac-10 North game.

Wakeland drove in two runs and scored twice.

San Francisco 8, Gonzaga 5

Freshman Aaron Hempel blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning as the Dons (27-24, 12-12) beat the Bulldogs (19-27, 7-17) in a WCC game in San Francisco.

USF also scored three runs in the seventh, with the help of Peter Quittner’s two-run doubles, to break the game open.

Derek Johnson picked up the win in relief, while Matt Kearney took the loss.

Pacific Lutheran 13, Whitworth 11

Keven Wynkoop hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Lutes (18-16, 6-10) came from behind to beat the Pirates (17-14) in an NCIC league game in Parkland, Wash.

PLU scored four runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game at 11. Whitworth helped the Lutes cause by committing six errors in the game.

Reliever Joel Barnett picked up the win after entering the game in the top of the 10th with Pirates runners on second and third and not allowing a run.
