Now Chapter President Quits Over Remarks About Simpson

The president of the National Organization for Women’s Los Angeles chapter resigned Monday, five months after being publicly censured for remarks she made about the O.J. Simpson case.

Tammy Bruce announced the resignation at a news conference she also used to publicize a new nonprofit organization dedicated to women’s and children’s rights.

Bruce said the Women’s Progress Alliance is a joint venture between herself and Denise Brown, sister of O.J. Simpson’s slain ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson.

In various television appearances and on her local radio talk show, Bruce has made it clear she believes Simpson is guilty, and that domestic violence, not racial tensions, should have been the backdrop to his trial.

“What we need to teach our children is … not about racism, but is about violence against women,” Bruce said during an appearance on ABC’s “Nightline” in October.

The statement angered several groups representing blacks and prompted NOW President Patricia Ireland to take the unprecedented act of censuring a member.

Ireland asked Bruce to apologize, but she never did. Bruce claims her remarks were taken out of context and were not racist.
