Congressman Wants To Block Gay Nuptials

Compiled From Wire Services

A Republican Georgia congressman plans to introduce a bill that would outlaw gay marriages by defining marriage in federal law as a “legal union between one man and one woman.”

The legislation by Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., also would give states the authority to reject the legality of same-sex marriages performed in any other state.

The Rev. Lou Sheldon, chairman of the Anaheim, Calif.-based Traditional Values Coalition, said he helped draft the bill in response to a court case in Hawaii that could make the state the first to recognize gay marriages.
