Valley Schools Send Dozens To Regional Track And Field Meet

More than 40 track and field athletes from Valley schools advanced to regional competition as the Greater Spokane League completed the first stage of state qualifying.

In district competition Thursday and Friday at Spokane Falls Community College, University and Central Valley combined to send 26 boys and 15 girls to regionals after the first night of competition.

Some athletes advanced in more than one event, and, with 10 of 34 events still to be determined, as many as 15 more Valley athletes may join those early qualifiers.

First night district champions included Titans Jeff Hollenbach with a school record shot put of 57-8, Craig Allen in the high jump, Adrienne Wilson in the long jump and Syd Perno in the shot put.

CV’s Ryon Triplett repeated as district pole vault champion.

Brother and sister Mike and Mary Caruso both advanced in the shot put for the Bears. The CV 400 meter tandem of Ryan Strickland and Andy Whipple approached their sub-50-second efforts of last year.

The most notable disappointment was the failure of Titan pole vaulter Cody Hirschi to advance.

“He’s capable of clearing 15-feet, that’s the bad thing,” said Titan pole vault coach Reg Hulbert. Hirschi had tied the school record of 14-0 earlier this year.

Eagles sweep track championships

West Valley’s girls and boys track teams completed unbeaten seasons Thursday with wins against Cheney and Colville.

That made it five Frontier League championships in a row for the Eagle girls. The boys won their first title since sharing one in 1988.

State qualifying begins Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m. at Eastern Washington University, with preliminaries and finals in eight of 34 events.

CV soph golfer to state

Sophomore golfer Brandon Smith was one of eight Greater Spokane League golfers to qualify for the State AAA tournament in Tacoma next weekend.

Smith shot a second round 72 at Wandermere and finished with a two-day total 150 to finish third.

U-Hi’s Jeremy Decker, whose two-day total was 155, missed state by a stroke. He is one of four alternates.

“The competition was tough,” said CV co-coach Rick Sicilia. “Our senior, Marty Woolf shot 75 and didn’t make it.” Woolf finished his two-day competition at 156.

Softball teams advance

West Valley swept East Valley to finish a 17-1 Frontier League championship season.

The top four Frontier League teams, WV, Colville, EV and Clarkston, go against the top four finishers from the Northeast A Tournament this weekend beginning Wednesday at Medical Lake.

Second round of Liberty Cup

Second-round winner of the Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Liberty Cup was Nancy Monteith.

She shot a low net 73 to qualify for end-of-season finals.
