It was Maria da Conceicao Dos Reis who gave her son a Mother’s Day present Sunday, not the other way around.
The 66-year-old mother of Toni Reis, who is gay, agreed to marry his British lover to prevent that man’s extradition from Brazil.
Reis, 31, and David Ian Harrad, 38, have maintained an exclusive relationship for four years in Brazil.
When Harrad was ordered to leave Brazil by May 15 or face extradition, Reis petitioned the Justice Ministry to allow the two to marry. Authorities denied his request, since homosexual marriages are not recognized by law in Brazil.
Brazilian law also says that a foreigner married to a Brazilian cannot be extradited.
