Spokane golfer Mark Rohde earned a berth in the Ernst Championship by firing a 5-under-par 67 in the Lynx Pro-Am at Indian Summer Golf and Country Club in Olympia Tuesday. Rohde won the tournament by one stroke over Jeff Bloom of Seattle and took home a first-place check worth $15,000.

He will compete in the Ernst Championship at Inglewood CC in Kenmore, Wash., July 8-9.

College basketball

A pair of 6-foot frontline players from California have signed letters of intent to play women’s basketball at Washington State University, according to coach Harold Rhodes.

They are Alicia Rubio out of Riverside City College and Jennifer Ludwicki from Fountain Valley High School.

Rubio, who attended Perris High School before playing two years at Riverside CC, averaged 22.4 points and 10 rebounds per game last season while blocking 40 shots, grabbing 86 steals and handing out 60 assists.

Ludwicki averaged 21.4 points and 7.5 rebounds as a high school senior. She is the school’s all-time scoring leader, led her team to two league titles and was the team’s most valuable player.

Track signings

Coach Rick Sloan announced the commitment of seven high school athletes to join his WSU track and field team.

University High high jumper Craig Allen, who has cleared 6-foot-11 this season, and distance runners Bryan Galloway of West Valley (Yakima) and Brad Treat of Flathead High (Kalispell, Mont.) were the three male signers.

Of the four females signed, Ellensburg’s Molly Monroe leads the nation in the javelin with a 159-0 toss.

Also committing to the Cougars were thrower Becky Potter (Gig Harbor), half-miler Alishia Booterbaugh (Battle Ground) and distance runner Tammi Green of Kelso High in Longview.

College baseball

Several Spokane area products figured prominently in Wenatchee’s shutout sweep of visiting Community Colleges of Spokane in a NWAACC baseball doubleheader.

Brett Corigliano and Josh Clark, both Shadle Park High graduates, each had two hits and an RBI in Wenatchee’s 10-0 victory in the first game. Steve Sebesta (ex-North Central) added an RBI double.

Wenatchee got a three-hit shutout in the five-inning opener and a six-hitter in the nine-inning second game, a 5-0 decision.

Joe Miller threw six innings for CCS in the second game and gave up three runs with only one walk in his first start of the year coming off elbow surgery.
