It’s not surprising to see that St. George’s senior Christian Laugen lowered his Class B area-best time in the 1,600 meters to 4 minutes, 29.2 seconds at the Panorama League track meet last week in Colville.
It was a little surprising to see him take the lead in the 800 with a 2:01.1.
And that made it extremely surprising to see him just miss the area-best time in the 3,200, winning in 10:19.4. “It was my birthday, that might have had something to do with it,” said the 18-year-old.
Laugen was second in the 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200 at the State B meet last spring, then second in the A/B cross country championships in the fall. He just recently added the 800 for speed work and realized not only was he good at it, he liked it.
Now he hopes to place in all three events at state next weekend - if he gets through the District 7 meet Friday at Whitworth. The top three in each event advance to state.
“If state was one day, I’d think about dropping an event but since I’ve got two days, I think I’ll go for it,” said Laugen, who will run at Wake Forest next year. “But, I’m not looking forward to Friday too much.
“I think I’ll be able to get one of the first three places. I certainly don’t think it will be my best times.”
