Moran, Fong Win Crowns

Ryan Moran and Amy Fong of Mead won singles titles Saturday at the Region IV-AAA tennis tournament at Central Valley.

Fong came back to beat Greater Spokane League rival Leslie Whitten of University 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.

After a 7-6, 7-6 earlier-match win against Walla Walla’s Ryan McCarthy, Moran beat Kamiakin’s Kyle Steiling 6-0, 6-3 for the crown.

The GSL continued its successful day as Darcy Ruemping and K.C. Richards of Ferris won the girls doubles title 6-1, 6-2 over a team from Eisenhower.

The top four in each division advance to state Friday in Lakewood, near Tacoma.

The Odessa girls and Medical Lake boys swept the District 7 & 9 A/B tournament at Eastern Washington University.

Marci Smith defeated Deer Park’s Christine Dickson 7-5, 6-1 for the girls singles title. Angela Ramm and Lori Watters beat ML’s Melissa Judd and Tawny Handy 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 for the girls doubles title. Smith was part of a state-title doubles team last year.

In boys singles, Josh Greene beat Lakeside’s Nick Som 6-0, 6-0 in the finals. Josh Johnson and Josh Mastell won the boys doubles title 6-2, 6-4 over Jason Smith and Meng Tseng of St. George’s. Greene placed fourth at state last year.

The top three in each division advance to state Friday in Spokane.
