Stockton Matches Record 62

Dave Stockton matched Bob Murphy’s day-old course-record of 10-under-par 62 and joined Jay Sigel to make the $950,000 NFL Classic competitive again.

Murphy, whose five-shot lead was the largest first-round advantage on the senior tour this year, lost it all in shooting a second-round 71 on the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J.

The round gave Murphy an 11-under 133 and left him tied for the lead with Sigel, who vaulted to the top with an 8-under 64 capped by an eagle on No. 18. Stockton was one shot back.

Rocco Mediate, under pressure from Corey Pavin, shot a 2-under 68 and retained the lead after three rounds of the MasterCard Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas. Mediate’s 54-hole total of 202 leads Pavin by a stroke. Pavin fired a 67 for 203 and was two shots ahead of Fred Couples. Ex-Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot 72 and is at 214.

Colin Montgomerie took a three-shot lead in the Benson & Hedges International at Thame, England. Montgomerie shot 5-under 67.
