Chicago Continues Grand-Slam Festival

Robin Ventura and Darren Lewis hit grand slam home runs as the Chicago White Sox became only the fourth team to hit three slams in two games, routing the reeling Detroit Tigers 14-3 Sunday night in Detroit.

Ventura hit his eighth career grand slam in a five-run third inning and Lewis hit his first grand slam to cap a six-run ninth.

Ray Durham hit a grand slam Saturday. The last team to hit three grand slam homers in two games was Milwaukee in 1980.

Detroit, outscored 41-13 in the series and outhit 50-29, has lost six straight and 26 of 30. The Tigers have given up five grand slams this season.

Chicago, which had 17 hits Sunday, batted .394 in its three-game sweep.

Blue Jays 3, Royals 2

Kansas City, Mo.

Ed Sprague hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, and Joe Carter doubled and tripled as Toronto beat Kansas City.

With Kansas City leading 2-1 in the seventh, Carter led off with a double and Sprague followed with his 12th homer, a line drive to left field. Carter was in a 1-for-19 slump before collecting three hits Saturday.

Erik Hanson (5-5) allowed both runs and eight hits in 6-1/3 innings, struck out four and walked four. Mike Timlin pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save, sending the Royals to their sixth loss in eight games.

Angels 10, Yankees 1

New York

Tim Salmon and Chili Davis hit consecutive home runs in the first inning as Chuck Finley and California broke a six-game losing streak by defeating New York.

Finley (5-2) struck out 10 and pitched a six-hitter. He escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first inning, and shut out the Yankees until Matt Howard’s sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth.

Rex Hudler and Jorge Fabregas also homered for the Angels.

Salmon hit a two-run shot and Davis followed with his eighth homer off Scott Kamieniecki (1-1). J.T. Snow added an RBI double for a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Red Sox 12, Athletics 2

Boston

Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco socked consecutive home runs to back Aaron Sele’s pitching and lead Boston over Oakland.

Vaughn also singled in a run in the fourth inning to give him three RBIs for the day. The reigning A.L. MVP has four home runs in his last four games and eight in his last 11.

Sele (2-3) allowed one run on five hits and two walks, striking out five in seven innings for his longest outing of the season. Loser Don Wengert (1-2) allowed six runs on seven hits in 3-2/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.

Indians 8, Rangers 5

Cleveland

Albert Belle extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a two-run single, helping Charles Nagy and Cleveland defeat Texas.

Nagy (7-1) allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings. He struck out six for his fourth straight win.

Jim Poole, Julian Tavarez and Jose Mesa finished with scoreless relief. Mesa earned his 17th save.

Brewers 4, Twins 2

Minneapolis

Steve Sparks stymied Minnesota with his knuckleball for 7-2/3 innings, giving Milwaukee the victory over the Twins.

The victory, the fourth straight for the Brewers, was the 300th for manager Phil Garner. The loss was the third in a row for the Twins, who are 4-11 in their last 15 games.

Clearing the bases

The Red Sox have hit 18 home runs in their last nine games… . Boston’s Mo Vaughn is 9 for 19 in his last four games and has 40 RBIs in his last 27… . Cleveland’s Kenny Lofton has reached base by hit or walk in 25 of his last 26 games.
