Josephine (Lewis) Ware Spirit Lake, Idaho

Funeral Mass for Josephine E. (Lewis) Ware, 83, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Yates Funeral Home of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ware, who was born in Minnesota, died Thursday.

She was raised in Minnesota and moved to Spirit Lake in the 1940s. She later worked for the Lakeland School District.

She moved to Lewiston earlier this year to be near family.

Mrs. Ware was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary societies of St. Joseph’s.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Earl Lewis and Don Ware.

Survivors include four sons, Dale Lewis of Spirit Lake, Mel Lewis of Lewiston, Doug Lewis of Liberty Lake and Rich Lewis of Spokane; two daughters, Marilyn Murphy and Janet Hedrick, both of Brush Prairie, Wash.; two brothers, Jake and Bill Ackerman, both of Minnesota; one sister, Lynne Brott of Spirit Lake; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dean Johnson Davenport, Wash.

Memorial service for Dean A. Johnson, 80, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Davenport Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home of Tekoa, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, a retired Latah-area farmer, died Thursday.

He was born in Davenport.

Mr. Johnson served in the Army from 1943 until 1946.

When he returned from the war, he worked at the Eldon Warwick farm as a mechanic and farmhand.

He married May Thomas in Coeur d’Alene in 1950, and they lived in Spangle for five years until they returned to the Eldon Warwick farm. Mr. Johnson worked there until 1961, when the couple moved to Latah and bought a farm east of Latah.

Mr. Johnson farmed and raised cattle until the early 1980s.

He was a member of Bluestem Grange 776.

Survivors include his wife, May; one son, Charles Johnson of Latah; one daughter, Roberta Houck of Blanchard, Idaho; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Clarence Sawyer Spokane

Funeral Mass for Clarence Tom Sawyer, 89, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, Mr. Sawyer died Saturday. He was born in Topeka, Kan.

He was a real estate salesman and a 15-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Sawyer was a member of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, a charter member of the Brotherhood of Friends and the Eagles Lodge, and was a 24-year Seahawks Booster.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mabel Sawyer of Spokane.

Bernard Raska Colville, Wash.

Service for Bernard John Raska, 67, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colville Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mountain View Park Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home of Colville, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Raska, who was born in Brush, Colo., died Friday.

He moved to Colville with his family in 1934 and graduated from Colville High School.

He married Joan Price in Coeur d’Alene in 1951.

Mr. Raska worked for Draper Lumber in Colville. In 1953, he began farming and working for L&R Logging.

He drove truck for Colville Wallace Motor Freight from 1965 until 1972 and then returned to logging until 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Raska; two daughters, Carol Hancock, of Spokane and Janice Schweitzer of Plano, Texas; three sisters, Alice Larsen, and MaryAnn Schrader, both of Colville, and Lillian Huguenin of Chewelah, Wash.; four brothers, George, Joseph and Ralph Raska, all of Colville, and Eugene Raska of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

June Knoles Spokane

Memorial service for June Knoles, 80, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Mrs. Knoles, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

She was a homemaker and a longtime Spokane resident. She had also managed apartments in Seattle.

Mrs. Knoles was a member of Community Radio Watch and had been a Bloomsday volunteer since 1977.

Her husband of 60 years, Carl Knoles, died March 8 She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Winnett of Spokane and Shirley Atchison of Cheney; one son, Richard Knoles of Lake Oswego, Ore.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dennis ‘Double D’ Dyrstad Spokane

Memorial service for Dennis Jay “Double D” Dyrstad, 43, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dyrstad, a 27-year Spokane resident, died May 11.

He was born in Vallejo, Calif.

He worked as a program manager with developmentally disabled people.

Survivors include one son, Cody Baughn of Spokane, and one sister, Paula Huff of Napa, Calif.

Ruth Davis Fairfield

Service for Ruth (Sargeant) Davis, 93, is set for 11 a.m. today at Spangle (Wash.) Community Church. Burial will be at the Spangle Cemetery. Schanzenbach Funeral Home of Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davis, who died Friday, was born in Farmington, Wash.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, George Davis, died in 1986.

Mrs. Davis is survived by one brother, Bryan Sargeant of Auburn, Wash.

Carl Ahlstrand Littleton, Colo.

Graveside service for Carl Michael Ahlstrand, 88, will be at 3 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ahlstrand, who was born near Logan, Iowa, died May 15 in Littleton, Colo., where he had lived for two years.

He had worked in construction at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation from 1943 until 1945. He also worked at a sawmill and did maintenance and repair work for the Phillips Petroleum Co. He retired in 1971.

His wife, Pauline Ahlstrand, died in 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Gary Ahlstrand of Eatonville, Wash., and Dennis Ahlstrand of Littleton, Colo.; one daughter, Judy Abalonson of Spokane; one sister, Letitia Kearney of Indianola, Iowa; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

William Block Spokane

Service for William Howard Block, 72, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Flossmoor (Ill.) Community Church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown, Wis. Hirsch Funeral Home in Matteson, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Block, who was born in Milwaukee, died Friday.

He moved to Spokane from Milwaukee 25 years ago. He had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.

In Spokane he was a member of Masonic Lodge 246.

His wife, Margaret, died in 1983.

He is survived by one daughter, Cathy Block of Spokane; one son, Bill of Mokena, Ill.; two brothers, Tom Block of Harrisburg, Pa., and Charles Block of Enterprise, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

Brittany Clutter Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for infant Brittany Lyn Clutter was Monday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Brittany was stillborn in Coeur d’Alene May 14.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Lynette Clutter of Coeur d’Alene; her grandparents, William and Susan Clutter of Otis Orchards and Bea Daniel of Coeur d’Alene; and great-grandparents.

Vinton Dean Spokane

No service will be held for Vinton B. Dean. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Dean, 84, died Saturday.

He was born in Glen Elder, Kan.

Mr. Dean was a 60-year Spokane resident and worked as a railroad engineer.

He is survived by one brother, Max Dean of Beloit, Kan.

Oza ‘Jack’ Callender Spokane

Service for Oza E. “Jack” Callender, 91, was Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Callender, who died Thursday, was born in Tooele, Utah.

He worked as a barber and had lived in Spokane for 50 years.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge, Loyalty Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and Sadir Khan Grotto of Spokane.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Edith Callender, and one stepdaughter, Jackie Willhite of Portland.

James Howard Spokane

Private service will be held for James I. Howard. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Howard, 83, died Friday.

He was born in Buck Creek, Okla.

Mr. Howard had lived in Spokane since 1950 and was a former Deer Lake resident.

He worked as a custodian for Spokane County.

He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and was a World War II Army veteran.

He is survived by nieces and nephews in Oklahoma.

Frank Montecucco Spokane

Funeral Mass for Frank Montecucco, 84, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Montecucco, who died Saturday, was born in Italy.

He owned Montecucco’s Wholesale Greenhouse and had lived in Spokane since 1955.

He was a member of the Inland Empire Flower Growers Club, the American Bowling Congress and the Spokane Bowling Association.

Mr. Montecucco is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ida Montecucco of Spokane; two sons, Max Montecucco of Spokane and Claude Montecucco of Cheney; one brother, Paul Montecucco of Portland; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
