Dole, Clinton Win Easily In Arkansas

Associated Press

Another state, same results.

Arkansas voters added their rubber stamp to the presidential primary process Tuesday, handing easy wins to Bob Dole and President Clinton.

With 88 percent of the precincts reporting, Dole was comfortably ahead of commentator Pat Buchanan in the Republican race, 77 percent to 23 percent.

Clinton had no serious opposition in his native state, although voters appeared likely to choose a handful of uncommitted delegates. With 90 percent of the precincts in, Clinton led uncommitted, 74 percent to 16 percent.

In the search for additional political ammunition, backers of both men are keeping an eye on the federal courthouse in Little Rock, where jurors in the Whitewater case weigh the fate of Clinton’s former business partners and the man who succeeded him as governor. The defendants are accused of fraudulently obtaining $3 million in loans from two federally backed lenders.

Clinton has not been accused of any wrongdoing, but the chief prosecution witness testified that the then-governor attended a meeting where a fraudulent $300,000 loan was discussed.
