Sabatini Out Of French

Compiled From Wire Services

Gabriela Sabatini, a six-time semifinalist at the French Open, withdrew from this year’s tournament, which begins Monday.

Organizers said Sabatini has not recovered from a stomach muscle problem that forced her to miss the Fed Cup and the Italian Open in the past four weeks. The Argentine was seeded eighth, and Kimiko Date of Japan moved up to replace her.

Sabatini’s withdrawal helped Swiss star Martina Hingis, who advanced to No. 16, allowing the 15-year-old to avoid the possibility of facing a seeded player for the first three rounds.

Patrick McEnroe and Frenchman Fabrice Santoro will also miss the event because of injuries.

Looking rusty after taking a month off and mourning the death of his coach, top-ranked Pete Sampras lost his first match on clay in nearly a year, to Bohdan Ulihrach at the World Team Cup in Duesseldorf, Germany.

Second-ranked Stanford reversed three losses earlier this season to defeat UCLA 4-1 and secure its 14th NCAA men’s championship in Athens, Ga.

Top-seeded Florida capped a perfect season with a 5-2 victory over second-seeded Stanford to capture the NCAA Division I women’s championship in Tallahassee, Fla.
