Boys Arrested After Man Watches Them Break Into Home

Two young boys were arrested on burglary charges Sunday after they reportedly were caught breaking into a Spokane Valley home last week.

A 10-year-old boy faces two counts of residential burglary. His 11-year-old friend and accomplice was charged with one count each of residential burglary and attempted residential burglary.

Both boys are accused of burglarizing a house in the 3300 block of North Dale last Thursday and trying to break into another next door.

A man whose house was the first to be broken into saw the younger boy crawl through a side window of the house next door. The older boy stood outside acting as a lookout, said sheriff’s Lt. David Wiyrick.

When the man confronted the two boys, he noticed one was wearing a hat that belonged to him. The man questioned the boys about where they got the hat and realized they had stolen it from his house earlier that day, Wiyrick said.

The boys led the man to a nearby church where they had hidden other things they had taken from him.

The man then let the boys go and later called deputies. Both of the boys were arrested on Sunday and booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.

Two arrested after shooting incident

A couple who argued violently at a restaurant were arrested early Sunday after a rifle was fired in the house they shared.

Deputies responding shortly after midnight to a domestic violence call at 2125 N. Coleman heard one gunshot as they arrived at the house. A man and a woman who were yelling at each other inside emerged a few minutes later and were arrested.

Katherine L. McLaughlin, 46, and Joseph R. Guerrero, 50, were arrested. Both told deputies they lived at the North Coleman address.

Wiyrick said that a few moments after the gunshot was heard deputies saw the woman walk out of the house. Then two men - including the man who was seen holding the gun - left the house. Neither man was armed then, but the man who had been seen with the gun was arrested.

The second man, a friend of the couple, was not charged.

Deputies searched the house but found no gunshot victims.

Several guns were found inside the house, Wiyrick said. The furniture was damaged and the phone cord had been ripped from the wall.

McLaughlin reportedly had pushed Guerrero during the argument at a restaurant.

The two continued to argue when they got home. Guerrero broke the furniture and McLaughlin threw a bottle of steak sauce through the window of an RV parked outside, Wiyrick said.

Guerrero then pushed McLaughlin down onto some concrete steps, before they went back inside, deputies said.

There, Guerrero grabbed a rifle and threatened to shoot the woman’s television set before shooting into the fireplace, Wiyrick said.

Both were arrested when they came out of the house.

McLaughlin faces charges of fourth-degree assault and third-degree malicious mischief.

Guerrero was booked into the Spokane County Jail on fourth-degree assault, third-degree malicious mischief, second-degree reckless endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
