Upstarts Stay Ahead In Kemper

Jay Williamson tore through the front nine for the second day in a row and Scott McCarron dominated the back nine as the two upstarts remained atop the leaderboard at the midway point of the Kemper Open at Potomac, Md.

McCarron eagled the par-5 6th and birdied five of his last 10 holes for a 5-under-par 66 and a 132 total at the TPC at Avenel course. Williamson shot a 31 on the front nine for the second straight day, but lost a stroke on the back nine to finish with a 67, one shot off the lead.

At Corning, N.Y., Rosie Jones shot a 3-under-par 69 and moved into a 3-stroke lead over of a group of four that included Patty Sheehan in the $600,000 Corning Classic. Jones made three birdies and an eagle and was at 8-under 136 for 36 holes.

Sheehan shot 68 and was with Barb Mucha, Liselotte Neumann and Chris Johnson at 5-under.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, had a 74 for 144, eight shots off the lead, and Clarkston’s Robin Walton was three more behind after a 75 in the second round.

At Nashville, Tenn., Isao Aoki sank eight birdies on fast greens for an 8-under-par 64 and a two-stroke lead after the first round of the $1.2 million BellSouth Senior Classic.

Masters champion Nick Faldo shot a 5-under-par 67 to take the first-round lead in the $1.5 million Volvo PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England.

Battling heavy rain at the Wentworth course, Faldo forged one-shot lead over England’s Paul Curry and Zimbabwe’s Mark McNulty.
