Blowers’ Double Knocks Off Expos

Mike Blowers hit a three-run double in the ninth inning Sunday as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied past the host Montreal Expos 4-3 for a three-game sweep and their ninth win in 12 games.

Tom Candiotti (3-4) allowed just two hits in eight innings but trailed following Sherman Obando’s homer in the seventh.

Blowers hit a bases-loaded double off Mel Rojas (3-3) and Roger Cedeno added an RBI groundout for a 4-1 lead. Moises Alou hit a two-run single in the bottom half off Todd Worrell, who lasted to pick up his his 14th save.

Marlins 8, Cardinals 2

Miami

Jeff Conine homered twice and Gary Sheffield hit his 16th home run as Florida stopped St. Louis’ five-game winning streak.

Conine, 5-for-39 in his previous 11 games, went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Braves 6, Pirates 3 (13)

Pittsburgh

Marquis Grissom hit a three-run homer in the 13th inning off Dan Miceli (0-2) after Atlanta’s bullpen couldn’t hold a 3-1 lead for Greg Maddux.

Javy Lopez hit two solo homers for the Braves, who won for the ninth time in 11 games.

Mets 1, Padres 0

New York

Bobby Jones scattered five hits in eight innings to win his fifth straight decision and Bernard Gilkey homered in the first off Sean Bergman (2-5), as New York stopped San Diego’s four-game winning streak.

Jones (5-1) struck out four, walked one and allowed only one runner to reach third.

Astros 7, Cubs 2

Houston

Jeff Bagwell drove in three runs and Shane Reynolds (7-3) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings as Houston completed its first three-game home sweep of Chicago in seven seasons.

Reynolds struck out 10 and has 22 in his last two starts. Castillo has lost five straight starts.

Phillies 10, Giants 1

San Francisco

Terry Mulholland (5-3) allowed one run and six hits in 7-2/3 innings, and Todd Zeile hit a ninth-inning grand slam as Philadelphia pounded San Francisco.

Mulholland helped himself with a double and a RBI single as part of the Phillies 14-hit attack.

Reds vs. Rockies, ppd.

Denver

The game between Colorado and Cincinnati was postponed by rain. It has been tentatively rescheduled for Aug. 29.

Clearing the bases

San Francisco Giants outfielder Glenallen Hill fractured his left wrist attempting a diving catch in the fifth inning of Sunday’s loss to Philadelphia and will be sidelined a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks… . Pittsburgh is the only N.L. team with a winning record (13-12) against Atlanta’s Greg Maddux… . St. Louis closer Dennis Eckersley, sidelined with a sore right elbow, was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
