Car Crash Kills Cda Businessman

A Coeur d’Alene businessman died Saturday night in a high-speed crash near Harrison, Idaho. John L. Nelson, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Idaho State Police, Randy J. Cayko, 32, of Hayden Lake was driving northbound on state Highway 97 shortly after 5 p.m. Nelson was a passenger in Cayko’s 1985 Mercedes.

North of Harrison, the speeding car rounded a curve, left the roadway and rammed a tree, the State Police said. Nelson was ejected from the car.

Neither man was wearing a seatbelt, and alcohol was involved in the crash, the State Police said.

Cayko was taken to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene. He was treated overnight and released Sunday morning. Police are still investigating the crash.

A lifelong Coeur d’Alene resident, Nelson started J&D Stereo with his brother in 1978. Nelson was not married and had no children, his mother said. “He was a real likable kid,” said Phyllis Nelson. “He liked to boat and he liked to work.”

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.
